Statement on Courthouse Evacuation
BALTIMORE, MD (Tuesday, February 7, 2023) — This morning around 9:45 AM, The Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. Courthouse (Courthouse West) located at 100 N Calvert St. was evacuated due to a minor fire incident that began inside an outer grating on the Fayette St. side of the courthouse. Smoke entered the building and was visible on the first floor.
Together with our Building Maintenance team, the Baltimore City Fire Department immediately contained the situation without visible damage to the courthouse.
The courthouse is currently being aired out with fans to remove any lingering smoke odor. We are working with the Baltimore City Department of General Services to clear the perimeter grating of the courthouse of remaining debris to avoid a future occurrence.
Out of an abundance of caution, the 100 North Calvert Circuit Court Facility will remain closed for the rest of the day. The 111 North Calvert Street Circuit Court Facility remains open.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Sheriff Sam Cogen would like to thank the following agencies that assisted the Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office in this evacuation event:
Baltimore City Fire Department
Baltimore City Emergency Management
Baltimore City Department of General Service
Baltimore City Department of Public Works
